BlackBerry Desktop Manager - Manage your BlackBerry smartphone on your computer
Review by on
When it comes to organizing data, smartphones may satisfy your needs, but a PC is more comfortable. If you connect a BlackBerry phone to your computer, BlackBerry Desktop Manager will help you with much more than simply transferring files from one device to another. The software gives you the possibility of backing up the data on your phone, synchronizing media files, managing applications and more.

Installing BlackBerry Desktop Manager on your computer may take a bit longer than expected, especially if you are used to lightweight applications. The software does not require top of the line hardware and it does not use too much disk space, but its installation file is 113 MB large, which may take some time to download.

The interface has a familiar design, so you will not waste any time studying its functions. Depending on which features you want to use, you will have to access different sections, by clicking various navigation options, on the left side of the window. Obviously, you will have to connect your BlackBerry phone to your computer before anything else, otherwise you will not be able to use any functions. The program works with the same efficiency, regardless if you connect the phone with a USB cable, or via Bluetooth or Wi-fi.

When you connect a BlackBerry smartphone, the software recognizes it and it displays its model, PIN, software version and when it was last synchronized or backed up. Moreover, the connection settings will be saved. If you have more than one smartphone, you can switch between your devices immediately. You may access different sections, on the same interface, to manage files and copy them to or from your computer, manage your organizer or applications.

Other sections contain options for synchronizing music, pictures or videos. It is also possible to synchronize the organizer on your phone with MS Outlook or other applications. Data synchronization works in one or two ways, which means that you can sync your data to or from your computer or in both directions at the same time.

An essential function is the possibility of backing up or restoring data on your smartphone. After selecting the Backup option, on the Summary screen or in the Device menu, you will be able to choose a backup method. BlackBerry Desktop Manager lets you perform a full backup, which includes all your data and settings, a quick backup, which excludes emails or a custom backup, which lets you decide what data to copy. The backup is saved as a single file on your computer's hard drive and you can select a different option to restore the data. As before, you will have the possibility of restoring all your data or individual files.

You should be careful when restoring files. Once you start the process, the software will delete the existing data on your phone, before it restores a backup. If certain files are not backed up or copied on your computer, you will lose it.

You can back up any data and settings from your BlackBerry smartphone, manage or synchronize files, on the same interface. The software lets you decide what data to back up and it will store it as a single file. In addition, it provides various details about your phone, it "remembers" the connection settings for individual phones and it lets you switch between devices immediately.

When restoring a backup, the software will delete all files on your phone, including unsaved ones.

Thanks to BlackBerry Desktop Manager's smart features, you can accomplish much more when you connect your smartphone to your computer. From backing up to synchronizing data, you can do everything with minimum effort.
